Note: The first pioneers, including artists, who explored and recorded the grand American west didn't drive cars or stay in hotels, but covered wagons and tents and traveled by horseback and wagons, just like the Native Americans they often encountered, sometimes friendly, sometimes not. This engraving has also been erroneously titled as a scene in South America, but has been verified at Yosemite by both the artist and geography. This engraving has sold at auction for as much as $600.

Note: Bierstadt could see the danger to the buffalo during the 19th century as the railroads brought "advernturists" west, so he painted them often and in dramatic fashion. His roll was significant in not only recording the magnificant Rocky Mountains, but also in bringing a heightened awareness of a slew of environmental issuies, helping to preserve the pristine west.

Three friends lazily fish from their favorite fallen tree in an obscure opening in the forest, where life-long bonds were formed and it never really mattered if fish were actually caught or not.This is another iconic image of Homer, that even the wood engraving has its place in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Note: This one of the relatively few original etchings in the oeurve of James Smillie. This marvelous etching is carefully drawn to highlight the dramatic light effects of chiaroscuro... the principle of using strong darks against lights to create the sense of theater production or drama by highlighting the main elements of a scene. At the time of this etching, there was no tradition establshed of pencil signing and numbering graphic artworks, as there is in the modern era.

Note: Worthington Whittredge was one of the leading artists of the Hudson River School, self-taught, and disciplined in his work. No less important is Robert Hinshelwood, who achieved a place of prominence as a master engraver in steel. Note: The Natural Bridge is an awsome sight, especially when viewed from a point similar to this engraving. The arch reaches 215 feet above Cedar Creek with a bridge span of 90 feet. The quiet flow of the creek accentuates the feel of solitude. Bartlett also co-authored a steel engraving with JC Armytage of the same scene, slightly smaller that includes figures. If you visit here, be sure to stay at the Natural Bridge Hotel, an elegant Victorian experience.

Haseltine, known as a luminist and a leading figure of the Hudson River School, did his bright compositions in oil, a most demanding task to translate such brilliance through the engraving technique. Note: This gem is filled with action... men working at the dock, a busy city, a sail unfurled advertising to vote for Boss Tweed* (William Marcy Tweed) for Ring Leader, even a young lad attempting to board the nearest ship as a stowaway. The skill of William Linton as an engraver is revealed in the center section of the scene, with buildings surrounded by horse-drawn carts delviering goods and supplies, vendors selling food and other goods, and even buses carrying folks to their work or shopping. A subtle and great engraving.

*Boss Tweed was the infamous corrupt polititian who bilked New York City out of tens of millions through control of various unions for city services and property managements.

geologically a high plains shaped over eons by winds, resulting in an arid desert, Every state in the Midwest US has a badlands region, noteably North & South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming.

Note: Lake George sits in northern New York state in the Adirondak Mountains just south of the Canadian border. It was a favorite area for the Hudson River artists in the 19th century.  Casilear, like many of the artists, joined with edngravers to expose their work to the general public. The skill of Hinshelwood  is revealed in the many textures in this work, and in the two figures, scaled down to a mear 3/16 inch.
